windmill palm tree1 Windmill Palm TreeWindmill Palm Tree Description

Windmill Palm has a slender single trunk that is around 8 to 10 inches in diameter with large, 4-foot-wide fans of sword-like leaves. The rough trunk is a bit narrower at the base covered with a loose mat of coarse gray or brown fiber. Leaves range in color from dark green to yellow-green leaves that seem almost silvery on the underside. The petiole is about 1 ½ feet long and armed with teeth.

Male and female flowers are borne on separate plants. In the early summer Windmill Palm produces large plumes of yellow flowers on the male plants and greenish on the female plants. Later the flowers of female plants transform into bluish-black fruits that are about 1/2 in (1.3 cm) in diameter. The fruits get ripe in the mid fall.

Growing Windmill Palm

Windmill is moderate growing palm that can reach 30 feet in height but is often seen much smaller, 10 to 20 feet tall. Dark green leaves form a nice symmetrical crown that is about 8 to 10 feet wide. It prefers partial shade. Growth rate is about 1.42 feet per year. This fan palm is a cold hardy palm that can tolerate cold down to 10 – 20F when mature.

Watering Windmill Palm Tree

windmill palm tree7 Windmill Palm TreePlants should be watered faithfully. Windmill Palm likes moist and well drained soil. Enough moister in the soil speeds up plant growth and improves the appearance, but is very drought tolerant. Irregular watering and drought slows growth rate dramatically. For the best results, water it every other day, for the first three months, and weekly for the remainder of its first year.

Windmill Palm Tree Fertilization

windmill palm tree9 Windmill Palm TreeSlow-release palm fertilizer with minor elements should be applied during the growing season. I fertilize it twice a year in the spring and early fall. Excessive fertilization may cause the tips of lower leaves to turn brown and die.

The scientific name for the Queen Palm Tree is – Syagrus romanzoffiana. Queen palm is native to the South American woodlands of Brazil and Argentina. Queen Palm is by far the most popular Florida Palm Tree. This inexpensive, elegant palm is a great addition to any tropical garden.

Queen Palm Description

It has a unique appearance because of its dark green lacy fonds that have double rows of leaflets. Its feathery leaves can grow up to 15 inches long with long petioles. It has smooth grey trunk with evenly spaced horizontal leaf scars.

queen palm tree1 Queen Palm TreeQueen Palm will surprise you with beautiful clusters of creamy flowers during the summer time. In the early winter a green fruit will appear that will turn orange as it matures. This fruit has a round shape and about 1 inch long with one single seed inside. Queen Palm fruit smells nice but is not editable.

Growing Queen Palm

Queen Palm is a fast growing palm that can tolerate cold down to 25F. It grows around 6 feet per year after establishing. This palm can get to 50 feet tall and 20 feet wide. Queen Palm grows very well in full sun although full sun with some shade is preferred.

Watering Queen Palm Tree

Along with proper feeding, correct watering is critical for healthy Queen Palm. Newly planted palms should be watered every day for the first week, every other day for the second week and about 3 times a week afterwards. Watering palm 3 times a week should be enough during the first summer, and a minimum of twice a week in the winter.

queen palm tree2 Queen Palm Tree Queen Palm Tree Fertilization

Queen palm trees should be fertilized 2-3 times a year in the spring or summer with a fertilizer that contains the most important minerals including magnesium, iron, copper, manganese and nitrogen.

queen palm tree4 Queen Palm TreeOne application in March and another in July should be enough. Remember not to position fertilizer against the trunk of the palm. Apply fertilizer to the soil in a large ring at least 2 foot from the trunk.

Queen Palm requires a lot of manganese for a healthy grow, not to be confused with magnesium. So even after applying the usual fertilizer that contains manganese, it’s a good idea to add more manganese to the soil.

Manganese deficiency is responsible for the “frizzy top” that you can witness on many Florida Queen Palms. That’s because most of the homeowners don’t know how to fertilize Queen Palm Trees properly.

If you don’t treat the “frizzy top” condition, your palm tree will get weaker and eventually die. Once you noticed that some of the frizzy symptoms are developing, add more manganese to the soil.

Pruning Queen Palms

Queen Palm needs very little pruning, mainly to develop a strong structure. The best time to prune Queen Palm tree is from September to beginning of November. You can remove old fronds that got damaged during the summer with a saw. Get rid of only minimum amount of fronds that are yellow or brown.

Excessive pruning can weaken the palm and slow its growth. If you have a tall Queen Palm, you might need a ladder to reach dry fronds. If you live in Florida, it’s easy to find a company that can do it for you.

Queen Palm Propagation

queen palm tree7 Queen Palm TreePropagated by seeds. Seeds of Queen Palm germinate better if collected from the green fruit that didn’t ripe yet. Try to plant as soon as possible, as dried seed is much more difficult to propagate. If you can’t plant the seed right away, you can store them. Before storing clean the seeds from the dust, air dry them and seal them in a plastic bag. The best storage temperature is around 65F-75F. It’s not recommended to store Queen Palm seeds for more than 4 months.
