I don't know how dogs get along with ponytail palms, but cats love them. At least, our cat did. We purchased a baby ponytail (base was about the size of a pearl onion) in Texas a few years ago and brought it home to Iowa to raise as in indoor plant, It was doing great in the bathroom until the cat got into it. He pulled it out of its planter and proceeded to chew on the leaves. We found it a few days later, returned it to the pot and it began to recover, then the cat got in the bathroom again. After the cat had made about 5 attempts at plant-icide, we finally gave up. The cat died awhile back we just bought another ponytail, much bigger one and brought it to a cat-less home.

I have two ponytails that I have had for over 35 years. Both have bloomed, one white and the other red. The white bloomer is blooming a second time and has 10-15 branches growing from the base. These are like kids to me, but they are now so tall that I don't know if I can winter them anymore. Could they survive if protected in zone 7? Virginia Beach, VA

I have a ponytail that has shouts all over it,top and on the base. I have tried to root some and nothing worked. I put root-tone on them and still did not make it. Would you do something different?? I have around 15 more shout's to work with. I think it is about 15 years old, it never has flowered, or made seed's..

Are ponytail palms poisonous to dogs? We have a new Yorkshire terrier puppy and he has taken to nipping at the leaves occasionally. Thank you.<br />Ken Yowan theyowans@cfl.rr.com
