Hi. I just bought a pygmy date palm and I have a question. Under the base of the trunk, where the root ball is there are a lot of ants. They weren't carpenter ants because they weren't black.

They may have been a reddish black color. Either way, I'm curious if they're bad for the plant. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks. Peter.

Hi Peter. Ants are good for making the dirt more airy and making the soil more draining. They should not damage your palm tree. Ants clean up the mess we don't want too. Ants in general eat some decomposing material and then produce food for the palm. ~Susan Brian
