My Windmill Palm tree has a white crystal substance on the fronds and the trunk. I noticed this a week ago (3rd week in December). I live in Brunswick County NC (Southeast Coastal area and Zone 7)and the winter has been very mild. The frond tips are also yellow and drooping. Any idea of what this white crystal substance is and how to get rig of it? The tree was planted in March 2011. I looked on the internet and really can't find any information on the problem. The closest I come to a problem is Mealy Bugs but these white crystals I have are not fuzzy.

Any help of information on what this is is appreciated.

Thanks

I confirmed the diagonosis with my county extention office that the white crystal substance is actually a soft scale. I sprayed the palm tree with horticultural oil in order to get rid of the scale. You can also use "Bayer Complete" which contains the active ingredient Imidacloprid. Hope this helps anyone else who might have a similar problem.
