We have a bottle palm in a very small area surrounded by a sidewalk and a hollow tile wall. It's been there for 15 years. Is it safe to be there? Will it's roots damage the wall or the sidewalk?

Hi Shahnawaz. The tree can spread up to 10ft wide. It is very slow growing. Its ok to plant them next to each other. If you look at the picture above, you'll see that those palms are planted pretty close to each other. Susan Brian

As a palm collector from Mauritius (one of the 3 Mascarene Islands), I would like to share with those loving our Bottle Palms (Hyophorbe lagenicaulis, local name "Palmier Bouteille"), that they are not native of the Mascarene Islands as often thought, but endemic to Mauritius only, with ONLY ONE surviving palm in the wild, on Ile Ronde, an island sanctuary north of the main island of Mauritius.
But they are numerously grown in most of our coastal gardens. Their usual range is from sealevel to about 400 metres.

They grow in many soils but love sandy, even coral beach soils and will tolerate sea-sprays and strong Trade Winds.

They prefer a savanna climate: warm tropical with a marked dry season. If planted in constant wet climates, they will not resist moulds & fungi. In sandy soils & dry weather they will benefit from drip irrigation and grow quite fast to form their bulbous trunk.

Their cousin Hyophorbe verschaffeltii "Palmier Marron" are stiffer and with a straight heavy trunk and bluish shaft when adult. They are striking yellow leafed when juveniles and are great indoors with ample sunlight. They are endemic to Rodrigues Island some 350 miles east of Mauritius.

The two palms easily cross-breed and buyers must be extra careful not to get the hybrid (except if this is desired) which will never develop the real bulbous trunk, but an in-between form and may retain old leaf bases... Only get your palms from a reputable grower who will ensure that his seed stock is pure... Enjoy your Bottles!!!

Hi Sandy, I just got a Beaucarnea (Bottle Palm) for Mothers Day. It is probly 3' high...and was planted in
a 12 inch pot,I transferred it to a 18' pot. I just noticed
this morning some of the leaves are turning yellow.
I just touched them, and they came off real easy.
Is this common after you transplant them?
I water it right after I switched pots.

I am not able to peel off the dead looking bark around the bottom of my bottle palms. Any tips on how to do this. The beauty of the bottle palm is the base of the tree.
